Longtime Grand-Rapids based guide Tom Neustrom sits down with Thomas Allen, host of In-Fisherman Storyline, to talk about the early days of Minnesota fishing discovery, and how guides found and promoted the amazing fisheries that the state is known for. Neustrom worked very closely with the Lindners to contribute to the magazine features and the early days of the TV show. This was a long conversation that you won’t want to miss, so we broke it up into two pieces for easier listenting. Part 1 is available here.

00:00:05.440 --> 00:00:17.880: We're listening to In-Fisherman Storyline, North America's top voice in multi-species freshwater angling. Here is your host, Thomas Allen.
00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:51.720: So do you-- when you go down south, you sunburn pretty quick? Mm-mm. No. I got skin like a lizard. I think as you get older, your skin kind of thins. And I think you got to be a little bit more careful. But years ago, I never wore skin. I never wore anything. But I'm really cautious now. Yeah. This is a good topic to shift to.

00:00:51.720 --> 00:01:22.600: I can't wear sunscreen because I sweat so much, and it's gone. And I've never been-- I don't love getting sunburned, so I kind of started wearing jeans or sun pants. I don't wear flip-flops anymore. I kind of miss it. But I like these sun shirts. They're comfortable. You're too hot in these things during the summer. Even in Alabama, where it was terrible hot, a hood. I wore a hood a lot. And you do get kind of hot inside there, but you'd be hot anyways.
00:01:22.600 --> 00:01:49.680: What about face masks? I always wear a buff or a beard. Yeah. I started a little more now than I did before. Do I do it every day? No, I don't. But the sun down in Florida, a lot on the Keys especially, is just intense. So you've got to wear something. I mean, you've got to--now they wear the face, the buff. But you should have some sunscreen available. That's good stuff.
00:01:49.680 --> 00:02:24.040: They had some stuff down there, and I forget the name of it. And then they outlawed it because it was doing something to the coral reefs. And all the guys down there had it. And then they went to something else. And I'm trying to--I don't even remember right now what I'm using, but I'm using some stuff that's really good. My wife, if she was on this interview, she'd know right away what it is. You know, I feel like you can--I wear gloves. I wear a face mask. I like gloves, yeah. I don't wear them all the time. I need to. But I'd say that six out of 10 days I wear them.

00:02:24.040 --> 00:03:02.320: But-- And then what do you do at the end of the day with them? Well, that's the important thing. Getting them off your hands, first of all, after a full day handle and fish gets to be a pain. But you've got to let them air out, or they get real gunky. Yeah, you can't wear the same ones two days in a row. Or if you leave them inside your boat, bad mistake. Bad deal. They smell real bad. Or if you leave them in your jacket and you go hang your jacket up somewhere, that's no good either. Yeah, you find them later, and it's like, man. Let me tell you just a little story. I got away from it. Where this guiding started, I was on Lake Geneva….
